Power-to-Gas: Power Storage, Gas Production, Bio-Methane or Flexible Load?
Due to the extension of renewable generation capacity, the volatility of the power supply increases. Additionally this results in a foreseeable rise in local power surpluses due to bottlenecks in the network. Consequently, load-based flexibility becomes necessary, in particular power storage. As the extension of conventional power storage is limited in Germany, new storage technologies are being considered. The German natural gas network represents a comparatively large and technically sophisticated storage potential. The Power-to-Gas technology (P2G) opens up the natural gas network to be used as “power storage” by using electrical energy to synthesise methane and feeding this into the network as a substitute for natural gas. Under which conditions could this offer economic potential? pdf-download »
